Great interior design choices for 2016

When 2016 rolls around, a new year opens up, waiting to be filled with inspirational interior design. Are you looking to make changes and inject new life into your décor? If so, you have come to the right place for ideas. Read on for colour cues, style signs and décor directions to keep you on track.

Paint power

One of the best places to start when transforming the look of a room is the paint colour. In 2016, the number-one colour to look out for is white. On the surface perhaps not very interesting, but there are hundreds of shades of white – alabaster, cream, ivory, magnolia, cloud, apple; the choices are endless. The trick is to select a white with overtones of another hue in your interior – if you have a jade sofa, plump for white with a cool, blue tint.

For modern minimalist interiors or traditional rooms, the upcoming soft velvety whites represent a clean break from primary colours; being more neutral, they are destined to have more staying power in everyday domestic interiors. The advent of 2016 will see streamlined window treatments such as affordable wooden shutters really taking off – easily painted to match any colour scheme, they make an elegant addition to any interior.

Another shade to be rocking rooms next year is pale pink. Think of rosé wine or blush champagne – it’s a light and fruity shade that sparkles with pale promise and sits well with deeply pigmented dark blues, greens and scarlets.

Wondrous wallpaper

Wallpaper makes a comeback in 2016. Look out for designs that reference fine art, outdoor scenes such as bird-filled glades or woodland, abstract blurred floral patterns, Moroccan geometric patterns and textured papers such as those featuring grasses, hessian and leather. The feature wall has died a death in style circles, unless of course you can cover it with a show-stopping display of exquisitely hand-painted wallpaper, silk or damask delights, or a large-scale photographic version of an alternative skyline or treetop canopy that transports you to another place.

Trends in children’s wallpaper embrace more traditional styles dealing with modern motifs. Think of Blyton-esque artwork featuring helicopters and computers as well as dinosaurs and sailing boats. Interactive wallpapers that can be felt-tipped and coloured in to your own taste is another growth area – no more shouting at the little ones for ‘customising’ their walls. It’s the next logical step from the blackboard-paint walls that were popular a few years back.

Design for less

For interiors aficionados working on a small budget, there are plenty of inspirations to get to grips with. Trends picking up in 2016 include upcycled painted furniture with geometric motifs, concrete as a finish on worktops, floors and walls, and still-life displays of stones, minerals and other naturally found objects.

Pedestals are the furniture piece we will all be clamouring for, and the great thing about pedestals is they come in all shapes, sizes and styles and are easily knocked up by even novice DIY-ers. In lighting, we will say farewell to fancy chandeliers and welcome in the new streamlined breed of pendant lights and interior storm lamps.

All these great interior design choices are just waiting to be discovered in upcoming trends for next year.
